Foldable phones are here, and at GEOMETRICAL we’re ecstatic about it. Phones like Apple’s new iPhone Duo let our flagship product, the Pocket Tripod PROv2, do more than any other compact phone tripod on the market. This isn’t just marketing talk. I’m going to break it down as an engineer.
Here’s the short version:
- Duo Preview works. You can tilt your iPhone Duo up or down to any angle, up to 105 degrees, while the outer screen stays in view, so you can frame your shot with Duo Preview.
- It keeps your phone clean and safe. It lifts a $2,000+ device half an inch off the surface, away from dirt, liquids and scratches. That matters a lot on a phone with a moving hinge.
- It works on uneven ground. The tripod splits into two halves with independently adjustable legs, so it stays rock solid on rough or slanted surfaces.
- It unlocks roll. Used along the edge of the phone, it gives you full roll adjustment, so you don’t have to straighten crooked photos later.
- It mounts on a real tripod. A standard ¼″-20 thread lets you put it on full-size tripods and sliders.
- It fits any case. Interchangeable Adapters match whatever case or phone thickness you have. For unfolded use, get the Slim Fit kit.
Duo Preview
The most obvious new trick is seeing yourself on the outer screen while you shoot with the high-res cameras on the back of the phone. Apple calls it Duo Preview. It’s a game changer: you can frame yourself perfectly and get the shot right away.

Here’s what most reviewers missed. To really use this feature, you need to be able to see the Duo’s outer screen while the phone is held at the right angle. The Pocket Tripod PROv2 is the only compact stand on the market that lets you do that.
You can see yourself on the outer screen while the rear cameras do the work.
Other stands rely on MagSafe to attach to the back of the phone. The Pocket Tripod PROv2 grips any edge of the phone instead, and adjusts through 105 degrees. Other stands and folios, even Apple’s own folio case with its kickstand, let you lean the phone back with the inner screen facing up, usually at one or two fixed angles.

The Pocket Tripod PROv2 does that, plus the opposite: it lets you tilt the back of the phone, the side with the outer screen, up or down. So you can set the phone down anywhere, angle it toward yourself, and still see yourself in Duo Preview.
Saving your phone from scratches and goop
In Apple’s marketing videos, people set their iPhone Duo face down on concrete, outer screen against the ground, or stand it on its edge on top of a neat, flat mailbox.
Let’s stop and think about that for a second. Are we really going to put a $2,000 phone down on rough, dirty surfaces? First, if it’s lying on its outer screen, you lose Duo Preview entirely.

Second, if you stand it half-folded on its long edge, Duo Preview does work, but now you need a perfectly flat, clean surface at just the right height, or you’re taking photos of your ankles. And the angle of that surface decides where the phone points. You get no control over tilt.

Assuming you’re fine with the one angle you get, you’d better make sure the surface is dry, too. With its moving hinges, the Duo is more exposed to dirt and water than a standard iPhone like the 18 Pro, and Apple describes it as water resistant, not waterproof. That’s important, because anywhere worth taking a picture tends to have mud, snow, rain or sand, and any of it can damage this beautiful piece of engineering. It also goes without saying that setting the phone down on its screen, even in a case, puts the outer display at risk of scratches or cracks.

The Pocket Tripod PROv2 handles all of this with flying colors. It lifts the phone about half an inch off whatever it’s sitting on, so liquids and goop stay away from the outer screen and the hinge. And because it has 105 degrees of built-in tilt, you’re not limited to chest-height mailboxes with perfectly flat tops. Put the phone on a surface at any height, angle the cameras toward you, and you still keep Duo Preview.

Wide, unmatched footprint
The Pocket Tripod PROv2 has a unique, patented ability to split into two halves, which you can set apart to widen its footprint. That gives your iPhone Duo a far more stable base.

So you’re not limited by height or angle, and you’re not limited by rough ground either. Each leg adjusts independently to match the surface under it.

The legs also follow the slope of the surface, so you can still point the phone wherever you need to. Most compact stands and folios give you one or two kickstand angles, and that’s it.

With the Pocket Tripod PROv2, the surface under your iPhone Duo doesn’t need to be flat or clean. It can be rough, uneven and wet.
New “roll” angle unlocked
This is the one I’m most excited about. On its own, the Duo’s hinge lets you tilt the phone through roughly 180 degrees, as long as you give up Duo Preview and lay it on its outer screen. Pair it with a Pocket Tripod PROv2 on its edge, though, and you unlock roll adjustment as well.

That’s really useful, because it means the Duo can sit on some genuinely awkward surfaces.

Not only does the Pocket Tripod PROv2 keep it safe from scratches and spills, it lets you angle the phone exactly where you want it, with no rotating and cropping afterward.

Once you’ve seen it, you can’t go back, and the Pocket Tripod PROv2 is the only compact stand on the market that can do it.
The ¼″-20 connection
If you already know the Pocket Tripod PROv2, you know it doubles as a phone clamp with a tripod mount. It isn’t meant for fast action, but the standard ¼″-20 thread lets you put it on larger tripods and sliders. It’s the same thread cameras use, so it fits anything a camera fits.

Not limited by case
You’ll almost certainly put your iPhone Duo in a case. I hope so, because it’s a delicate device. The nice thing about how the Pocket Tripod PROv2 holds a phone is that it’s universal: it only cares about thickness. Each kit comes with nine Adapter sizes and works with bare phones and cases alike. Just swap in the Adapter that best matches your phone’s thickness.
Fifteen sizes across the two kits. Slim Fit covers 5.5 to 9.5 mm and Standard Fit 8.5 to 12.5 mm, nine in each.
Which kit for a Duo?
One caveat: the iPhone Duo is 5.2 mm thick unfolded, but 11.3 mm folded. We do sell 11.0 mm Adapters, and larger sizes for cases, but we recommend the Slim Fit kit, with Adapters from 5.5 to 9.5 mm. Everything that sets the Duo apart from a standard phone happens while it’s unfolded, and for that you need the slimmer Adapters in the Slim Fit kit. If you know you’ll mostly use your Duo folded, go with the Standard Fit kit instead. To get the most out of it, though, Slim Fit is the one we recommend.

The iPhone Duo changes what a phone can do when it’s standing on its own. But Duo Preview only pays off if something can hold the phone at the angle you want while leaving the outer screen where you can see it, and a stand that grips the back of the phone can’t do that.
These are exciting times for phones again. Samsung, Google and others paved the way, and we’re glad to see Apple join them with this form factor.

Common questions
Does the Pocket Tripod PROv2 work with the iPhone Duo?
Yes. Unfolded, the Duo measures 5.2 mm, which sits comfortably inside the Slim Fit kit’s Adapter range. Because the tripod grips the edge of the phone rather than clamping or sticking to the back, nothing covers the outer screen, and it doesn’t need a MagSafe ring to hold on. You can also clamp it at the phone’s center of gravity to keep it stable.
Slim Fit or Standard Fit for the iPhone Duo?
Slim Fit, unless you know you’ll mostly use the phone folded. Everything that makes the Duo different from a standard iPhone happens while it’s open, and open, it needs the slimmer Adapters. The Slim Fit kit covers 5.5 to 9.5 mm, which fits the unfolded Duo bare or in a case.
Can I use it with the iPhone Duo folded?
Yes, with the right Adapter. Folded, the Duo is 11.3 mm, which needs the 11.0 mm Adapters. Those come in the Standard Fit kit, and they’re also sold on their own if you already have a Slim Fit kit and want to cover both.
Can I still use Duo Preview with the phone in the tripod?
That’s the whole point. The tripod holds the phone by its edge and adjusts through 105 degrees, so the outer screen stays facing you at whatever angle you set. Stands that attach to the back of the phone cover the outer screen, which is the screen Duo Preview uses.
Does it work with a case on the iPhone Duo?
Yes. You choose Adapters by total thickness, not by phone model, so a case just means going up a size. The kit comes with nine sizes in 0.5 mm steps, and swapping one takes a couple of seconds.
